Maruti Suzuki initiated the export of its vehicles in FY 1986-87. Their first large consignment consisting of 500 cars was shipped to Hungary in September 1987. The company achieved the milestone of one-million exports in FY 2012-13. In these exports, more than 50 percent of them were undertaken to the developed markets in Europe. Maruti Suzuki produced the subsequent million in over eight years focusing especially on the emerging markets in Latin America, Africa, and Asia regions. With collective efforts, the company managed to gain a sizeable share in markets such as Chile, Indonesia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. Its various models such as Alto, Swift, Dzire, and Baleno have appeared as attractive choices in these markets.

Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, MSIL, spoke that Maruti Suzuki has been exporting vehicles for the past 34 years, much before India became a prominent player in the global automobile business. This early global exposure helped in enhancing the quality and attain global benchmarks. According to his statement, MSIL currently exports 14 models, nearly 150 variants, to over 100 countries. Vehicles produced at MSIL facilities in India have found high recognition owing to global standards of quality, safety, design, and technology.
